This follows the story of the main character, represented in a round, circular shape. The circular form represents the imperfections caused by spinning out of control. The clumsy character goes through a journey of obstacles and fails every time. Each time the character faces failure, their round shape bounces back, symbolizing resilience and the continual push to try again. The animation or sequence of movements reflects a repetitive pattern, reinforcing the idea that even in the face of constant setbacks, the character keeps going, not discouraged by their mistakes but instead finding humor in them. The playful, upbeat music supports this continuous cycle of trial and error. Ultimately, the character is prosperous and successfully climbs up the mountain.

This animation is inspired by the work of American graphic designer and filmmaker Saul Bass, precisely his 1958 title sequence for Bonjour Tristesse. The project seeks to replicate the historical significance of Bass’ graphic animation, maintaining the same visual style and music while using these elements to explore a mental health epidemic.
For this iteration, I chose Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as the central health issue, focusing on the range of symptoms experienced by individuals suffering from this condition. The teardrops used by Bass in the original title sequence served as a direct visual reference to symbolize the symptoms of a person who struggles with Major Depressive Disorder. The teardrops represent the overwhelming feelings of sadness, helplessness, and isolation that accompany depression. The subtle transitions in opacity convey the uncertainty and shifting states of the disorder.
